The leaders are a mix that no single health-system model explains, which is the first clue that this ranking is driven by the market for private dental care rather than by public provision."},{"question":"Why does the dentist ranking look so different from the doctor and nurse rankings?","answer":"Because dentistry sits largely outside public insurance across most of Europe and is paid for out of pocket. Dentist numbers therefore track private demand, fee levels and the economics of running a practice rather than a health ministry's workforce plan. The inversion is visible country by country: Bulgaria ranks third here and near the bottom of Europe on nurses per head, while the Netherlands and Ireland, both well resourced on nursing, sit at 57.9 and 47.4."},{"question":"How many people does a European dentist serve?","answer":"At the median of 81 practising dentists per 100,000 inhabitants, roughly one dentist for every 1,234 people. In Greece the figure is nearer one per 750; in Serbia, one per 3,713. Density is not the same as access, though, since where dental care is privately funded the binding constraint on patients is usually price rather than the number of practitioners."}]}
